Lubricant is used for reducing the coefficient of friction as well as providing a protective layer. For lugs, the main benefit is to prevent galling between the plating on the mating threads and on the mating surfaces of the nut/washer. If this happens, the plating flakes and ‘gums’ things up, resulting in a higher torque to turn the nut. Also with the plating gone, corrosion starts.
With a properly lubricated assembly, less torque (force) is required to get the desired preload (easier on the congero), and less wear and tear occurs on the mating parts (happier drum). I prefer white lithium grease like that used by bicycle shops because it doesn’t run and doesn’t smell like petrol. Vaseline is not an acceptable lube for threaded assemblies. Auot grease is o.k., but smells.
Put a decent dab inside the nut on the washer side. That way when you tighten the nut up the grease is carried through the length of the threads inside the nut. Also smear a little on the faying surfaces of the nut and washer; not too much only a little is needed. Wipe off any excess so you don’t get any on your 501’s.
