I've got to get some. What brands/types do people recommend?

I've used cheap ones before, but not for long, as I couldn't live with the high-frequency attenuation. Not sure if I want to go with the top-end custom-molded variety. Are there any good one's in-between?

I've seen some called 'Hock's Noise Breakers', which apparently only come into play when the sound exceeds 85db. Must be great if it works.

"El Cheapo" variety's serve their purpose momentarilly but cut out certain frequencies and make hearing vital instruments as well as clouding the hearing of your own instrument.

What price does your hearing have? Can you put a price on the use of your ears?

Get a referral from a real Doctor *insert stab* not a self proclaimed version :;):  and see a hearing/ear speacialist who will custom make some to suit your ear shape and a set which which will cut out only the frequencies you want out.

They are a worthy investment if you play in a loud band/loud venues, a couple hundred dollars is nothing in relation to protecting your hearing.

You could get some high end ones for around $150-$300 research what is out there, see a proffesional. :;):

Oye mis hermnanos!
This is a serious subject, one which I have personal experience with.
Last year I went into a studio (actually it was on a college campus), to do some recording for a demo. I used their headphones (which the engineer pulled them out of a box in the corner). First of all the the volume adjustment was broken, they were loud to begin with, but after the day was over, I'm driving home, when my right ear begins to burn. When I got home, it was red on the outside, and still a sensation of burning. As for the redness and burning, I can only summize that there must have been an insect housed in the headphones when I put them on, fortunately it didn't travel inside my ear though!

This uncomfortable pain continued for approximately two days, then I finally went to my doctor's office. He couldn't detect anything, the ear (inner ear, ear canal) was in good condition. The experience left me with a ringing in my ear (tenitus). This worried me, so I went to get some custom, medically referred ear plugs made. I keep them with me at all times (providing I can't use my in-ear monitors). I agree with Abakua's observation on this point. You should take care of your hearing, afterall, what is music if not sound, and what would that be if you can't hear!?

Many blessings Abures!

Bataboom, you've reminded me of a documentary I saw a while back about car audio enthusiasts damaging their hearing.

A young guy with a 3kw rig in his automobile was taken to a hearing specialist for tests. The results showed he had markedly lower sensitivity to higher frequencies. His response: "so you're saying I need to pump up the high-end on my equalizer? thanks doc!".

Yeah, hearing is something you can't take a risk with - I think I've already got a bit of damage (often have to ask people to repeat themselves on the phone etc...). So have just invested in a pair of custom plugs from 'the earplug superstore'. Should be here with in a week, along with ear-molding kit...

Ears a good idea

Try ringing this number in Britain and they do a free hearing test over the phone 0845 600 5555, I dont know if you can access it internationally, but maybe worth a try.
You will need a good connection of course, and it will give you an idea if you need to do anything about your hearing.

Hope its useful let me know
