The advanced workshop in Afro-Brazilian Percussion with Dudu Tucci in September 2006 will begin the group of Raízes do Brasil, with altogether 360 hours of lessons, spread out over a period of two and half years.
This course in Afro-Brazilian percussion, unique in Scandinavia, is designed for participants who want to be intensely involved with Brazilian percussion. Requirements for participation are foremost passion for the music and staying power, not necessarily skills already acquired. Percussionists who have until now had no experience with Brazilian music are also welcome. Participants will bring skills and playing experience on different instruments to the workshop, so the basic techniques and rhythms for each instrument will be covered first.
A high level of learning develops through the intensity of the workshop, the participants’ growing together into a real group, and the practice sessions between the workshop blocks.This structure also offers the individual the opportunity to focus on what he/she prefers.Besides the instruments of the Bateria, there will be a particular emphasis on the conga and pandeiro.
The goal of the advanced workshop is to enable the participants to teach and lead their own groups. For this reason the Master Class workshop will directly follow this advanced workshop.The workshop will be held in english.
Workshop Scheduling
Monday at 18:00: meeting and presentation, class from 8pm till 10:00 pm (2,5 hours) ;
Daily classes from Tuesday to Thursday: 10am to 13:00, 14:30 to 19:00 and 20:30 to 22:00 (10 hours daily);
Friday: 10am to 13:00, 14:30 to 16 (5,5 hours)
Saturday: 10am to 13:00, 14:30 to 17:00 (4,5 hours)
Total 42 hours
Technical Content and Theory
Congas: slaps, open tones, muffles, floating hand; independence; grooves on one, two or three congas; solo, playing in duo, trio and quartet-stick technique-grooves, lines, breaks, calls, solos, phrasings-leading groups, -music theory and history, knowledge of instruments, notes. The course official language will be English.
Musical Content
Popular music: All styles of Samba, Batucada and Pagode, Afro-Samba, Samba-Raggae, Funk-Samba, Timbalada-rhythms, Maracatu, Baião, Afoxé, Jazz-Samba, Latin-Grooves-Traditionel Music: Candomblé-Angola and Ketu, rhythms of Umbanda.
Instruments
Congas-instruments of Batucada: Repenique, Timba, Caixa, Surdo, Tamborim, Agogô, Chocalho, Cuica, Apito-Pagode-instruments: Pandeiro, Repique de mão, Rebolo, Tantan-Atabaques, Berimbau, Zabumba, Cowbell, Triangel, Shekerê.
Location
Location for the course is Studiefrämjandet in Malmö; for those people who are not resident in Malmö collective rooms at Malmo Hostel are available for 175 Swedish Crowns daily. The Malmo Hostel has breakfast facility and it is located 10 minutes walking to Studiefrämjandet.
Cost
The seminar cost is 2500 Swedish Crowns.
General Conditions
Each person is responsible for him /herself: the organizer is not responsible for any losses, damages, or injuries to participants or their property. In the case of the organizer cancelling the course, only the course fee will be refunded.
Registration
To register, please send an email or ordinary mail specifying your name and surname, address and contact, acceptance of the conditions and pay the fee by money transfer or charge the cost to your account. Registration will not be valid until payment is completed; this will be confirmed in writing. Registration deadline is 6 weeks before the first day of said course, after that cancellation of the contract is only possible per post and for a processing fee of 30% of the total course cost. For cancellation within one week of the course a 50% fee will be charged, for cancellation one day before or for no-shows the entire fee of 100% will be charged. Participants may send a replacement person to take part in the course. We recommend registering well in advance.
