I was listening to WABI in New york yesterday.
They were on the phone with Candido from a studio in NY where they were celebrating his 86th birthday.

I was announced that he would be recieving an award from the National Endowment of the Arts for his Music Contribution and innovation, and that the award would be presented by president Bush.

Its well deserved that of our masters gets reconized for all he done for all music.

Congradulations.

Happy Brithday Maestro

Candido's playing is so pure, honest and simple. I don't mean the simple
on the near side of complexity. It's the sublime simple on
the far side of complexity. With a few sparing notes and pure tones
he has the capability to put a listener into a trance. I've went to
seem him play several times with the Conga Kings and as a guest
with others. Whereas the others had their unique signature - ie. speed,
melody, Candido clearly still had the strong feel of Africa
in his playing. I wish him many more years of health & happiness.

I just got The Conga Kings cd, yeah it is GOOD!
I'm going to have to try and sort out Candido from the others!
Man, I wish I could see them live! I keep hearing about
how all these older legends used to live here in SF!

Yeah I just picked up an Aguabella cd last night, it sounds good!
You New Yorkers get all the cool gigs!
Maybe Francisco will have a birthday gig over here, and
Candido and Patato will play with him over here..

I gotta get Aguabella's local schedule, but his site was down last night!

I read that Dizzy Gillespie called Aguabella the "John Coltrane" of congas!!
