Children's Music?

Postby Chupacabra » Sat Jun 11, 2011 8:10 am

I have recently discovered that my newborn son has taken a liking to music... YAHOOOO!! :P

Can anyone recommend any recordings or artists from Cuba/Carribean/African diaspora who play music and tell stories for young children? I have some old Harry Belafonte recordings back at home in Canada but that won't do me or him any good here in Japan! The time I can spend on the internet is very limited now so spending a lot of time searching is not an option right now.

Whenever he starts to cry and the usual methods of settling him down don't work I just whip out the old iPod and put on some tunes that aren't too heavy and he settles right down... it's amazing! A lot of the music I have is pretty intense for a baby. He will stop crying, but then he starts kicking his legs and thrashing his arms like he wants to get up and dance or something!

Hello Chupacabra,

CONGAtulations on your newborn son. When my 2 year old son was about to be born I looked a lot of CD's for kids music but I wanted to have good music meaning no cheap midi piano recordings with organ beats if you know what I am talking about.
I got these CDs and I hope you like them.

Salsa for Kittens & Puppies (Book & CD) = It is a latin music CD, bilingual with really cool songs for children. It was my son's favorite from 0 month to 1 year until he started to watch Barney so now Barney music is his favorite but I am sure he will come back to it.

Latinoamerica Infantil = it is a story telling CD with original Latinamerican songs all in spanish. I do not know where you are originally from but I am sure you and your kid maybe when he gets a little bit older will like this CD. Is about children going to Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela.

Latin Lullaby = Probably the best bedtime CD in spanish. You will fall to sleep with him listening this CD. it is great.

There are many others but this is probably what you are looking for.
