Bata drum building

my friend is going to have a baby and I thought about building a small bata drum from one piece of wood for him. I'm not expecting to build a great drum, but I would like to make it the best way I can. Anyone has some tips how to build the drum, how to choose the wood, basics about drum constructing etc.?
