LP bata drums

I'm just wondering if anyone has any information on the approximate year that LP started making batá. This is for my (very nearly finished!) PhD thesis. I've tried contacting LP but because they were sold to DW a few years back they didn't have the info. I'm guessing they may have started making them in the 80's, but that's just a stab in the dark. If anyone may have seen them 'back in the day' this would be really helpful. Thanks!

Martin Cohen is on Facebook. Try pinging him.

Also, ask him why the hell the okonkolo is so small. :-)

Hi Kent,

should have been at least 1978 or even before, according to a catalogue from that year.

Best,

Thomas

That's great Thomas, thanks for that info! I tried tracking down some LP catalogues on the Internet, but didn't have any luck. I tried the Congahead FB page, but didn't get a reply. So the input from here is perfect. It's not a major part of my thesis, just a little detail that would be nice to add.

You're welcome, Kent.

Of course we are talking about their fiberglass model. They claimed to have designed them with the help of Julito Collazo, which seems strange, considering Julito's traditionalism; because those drums did not look like anything traditional, particularly the hypertrophic iyá ...

yeah, as I understand it, it was Patato which influenced their size and shape.
