I practice my congas together with recorded rhythm patterns on my old Yamaha DJX. It has over 200 patterns, it just serves as 'sounding board' or 'lead off' instrument to play along. While doing that I create my own fills and works just great for practicing using different patterns for playing along. It also acts as an actual rhythm metronome to play along. You keep the volume low so you don't hear it too loud and sounds like you are part of the ensemble. There are so many patterns to work with so you don't get bored - this to me is real conga workout because you are playing by ears and there is nothing better than that. Try it out - you'd like it. :)

I usually practice with actual tracks, i.e.(Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Poncho Sanchez and various Artist). It really helps like you said timing and improv. :D
