Hi I wondered if anyone knew whether "disco azucar" by Los Van Van is a songo or a merensongo (or how to tell the difference)

Hi Martin,

In effect , the rhythm used for "Azucar" is merensongo.

The feeling in melody and chords could be thought as a normal Van Van's Songo.
But what they used in the Percussion section is Merensongo. You must pay attention to the Timbal pattern. Here Changuito plays his creation : Merensongo.

If you have still doubts, look at the video : The history of Songo (changuito), where he explains the concept. In my opinion this is one of the best instructional videos, very recommendable!
