There are a variety of rhythms you can play. I recommend you check out the work Paulinho Da Costa does on the first Anita Baker album, his stuff is so suttle, you almost can't hear him,but he's there. Also some old Marvin Gaye, might do it, and anything by Stevie Wonder from the 70's....JC JOHNNY CONGA....

O-P-O-P-S-T-P-O-P-O-P-T-S-T-P-T

O - Open
P - Palm
T - Tip
S - Slap

R L R L R L L R L R L L R L L L

JC's absolutely right, and I've just transcribed for you the rhythm on - from memory - Marvin's track 'What's Going On', or at least one of the tracks from that album!

Saludos, there are several patterns which go from the basic tumbao pattern, and up to the Cha-cha-cha pattern and Rumba,(for some of them),just remember R&B is a label(name) which was created to cover differents styles in the Afro-American Music. The example of Marvin Gaye's 'What's going on' is absolutely right.

The conga player was Eddie "Bongo" Brown with Marvin Gaye and most of Motown early to Marvin Gaye " I Want You"...A great percussionist to learn from

The fusion of cuban percussion in to R&B,(even when that percussion was introduced in to jazz before), was started by(some people didn't relize it) Mongo Santamaria with the recording of Watermelon Man of Herbie Hancock,in the early 60's,( which set up the structure of what was called Bugaloo, it was pick it up by Bill Cosby which brought it to his show(the percussion),and set up the fire which was followed by James Brown,Marvin Gaye,Smoking Robinson,Four Tops, etc.

Man, this is the best site ever. I've been playing Marvin Gayes
"What's Goning On" wrong. Not entirely, just a couple of strokes, but that makes a lot of difference. Thanks.
