I have come across contradictory discriptions of quinto/conga /tumba
not knowing if i have a conga/tumba or a quinto /tumba set.
would someone discribe what dimentions these terms discribe as far as type of drum,
Or is it all relitive . my largest drum is 12 inches across , smaller is 11. and i have a small drum that is slightly over 9 inches i believe.

I think your smallest drum is the requinto, then conga ,tumba. I also have a 9 3/4 and have seen it referred to as a requinto and quinto. I would imagine that it is all relative to size but I have seen drums of the same size(i.e. 10 3/4) refered to as quinto and conga. My sets of Gon Bops are 9 3/4, 10 3/4, 13 and a set of 9 3/4, 10 3/4 and 11. The 13 has been called a tumba/super tumba, so who knows. I'm sure Johnny Conga knows.

U got it BdrBongo...requinto is anywhere from 9 inches to 10 inches, in diameter a conga is normal now at 11 inch, then the middle drum is 11 1/2.. the tumba is 12 and 1/4, super tumbas are from 13 up to 15 inches. I measure straight across the top of the head. My Pearl tumba is actually 12 inches across the head, but listed at 12 1/4...."JC" Johnny Conga.... :;):

Just as a comment, be aware that sometimes the names conga, quinto and tumbadora are used regardless of the size to refer to the congas or the conga player in general.(This is just for "street talk" specially in Spanish)
The normal set up is to play with what the manufacturers call conga and tumbadora. However, sometimes people call the conga, quinto and sometimes when somebody wants to refer to the conga player it will say "...and in the tumbadoras.... Quinto is used when somebody is "soloing" (regardless if the person is playing a quinto or not).
Some people refer to the set of congas as "tumbadoras" also.

so in a nut shell is it safe to say quinto/conga/tumba is as follows with a 3 drum set?
quinto = smallest drum
conga = medium drum
tumba = largest drum

cant say that I do johnnyconga, does he have a web site or somehing maybe I have heard of him.
9 outa 10 if you from New Orleans you play either jazz or creole swamp pop... what Genre does he work in.

Hector was working with Steve Masakowski, but was hanging at a Jamaican restaurant down just a few doors down from thee Jazz club, whose name escapes me . But Mr. Marsalis always plays there. He has a little Latin thing going. I sat in with him when I was there. He a Cuban from Miami..plays timbales....peace..."JC" Johnny Conga.....
