I tend to use modified less busy Songo type grooves for hip hop as well as some of my own simple grooves which I based off guaguanco, pilon, mozambique and tumbao riffs.
Depending on the tune, I may also play tamborine, shakers and other effects in combination with simple grooves on congas.
Listen to what ths bass and drums are doing, play in groove with that.

With 2 of my bands we recently did every Fri night in a festival in Newcastle during Feb.
In Sydney we play all over the place, mainly festivals, clubs and more recently national tour of Aus.
Let me know if you are coming to Sydney, will let you know where we are playing next.
