Hi All

I have been to study in Havana 3 times now with Emilio del Monte, Amado from clave y guaguanco and Hermanos Bravo but due to the distance, cost and my family situation it is now not so easy for me. I have heard that Anga lives half the year in Paris, is this info right? This is about 3000 miles closer to home for me than Havana and it would be great if I could try to study with him once or twice a year. I guess he is VERY busy but it might be worth a try. Unfortunatly I have no way of contacting him. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get in touch?

Otherwise any other suggestions for teachers in Europe.

Thanks for any input!

hey

i searched all the web for a contact for ANGA in france but i couldnt find anything

i've heard about Orlando Poleo who is a very good percussionist and Gustavo ovalles who plays with omar sosa
they both are in france

i have the same problem as you do since i live in the middle east and Cuba is too far for me and i dont have any idea on how to get a teacher there or how much will it cost

that's why i thought of France

Hi

Fees for tuition were about US$10 per hour plus a translator if needed. Each time I stayed in a hotel so this cost a lot of money but I'm not sure I would be keen to stay outside of the hotels in Havana, don't know what other peoples experiences have been but it's really good to get back to a big clean hotel after a day in the Havana suburbs. Also I have been behind travelers going through immigration at Jose Marti airport who were staying outwith hotels and the cuban officials are always a bit tough about that.

The guys I study with are famous.

Amado Dedue Garcia is lead percussionist for the top Rumba ensemble in Havana, Clave Y Guaguanco. Check out 'Noche de la Rumba', 'songs and dances' and 'Dejala en Puntica'. Three if the best rumba cd's ever.
Emilio del Monte plays congas for Cubanismo, Omara Portoundo, Alex Cuba band, El Nene, Buena Vista the next generation and Roberto Fonseca. He also teaches at the conservotoire in Havana. His father (same name) is the legendary Timbale player.

I don't have a contact for Changuito but I saw one on one of the forums, can't remember where.

It's no problem staying outside of hotels in Havana. There are plenty decent "casa particular" in Vedado e.g. They cost about 25 dollars per night for 2 persons... And if you go further out in the suburbs, you can stay at illegal ones for about 10 $.

I heard that Anga may have recently moved to Spain.

Also, I heard that Changuito suffered a
small stroke or heart attack a few weeks ago.
I hope he's doing better now.

I have friends that rent a whole house for that a month in Cuba, and have been doing it for years, when they go....It won't be hard tofind a place , but don't forget to take YOUR OWN toilet paper and personal goods....u wont have the amenties if you live on the economy, versus a room in a Hotel..."JC" Johnny Conga..
