Conga patterns for Hawaian music?

A place where discuss about secrets, tips and suggestions for practicing on congas and to improve your skill and technique ...

Bit of a strange one this: I friend of mine has been offered a gig playing congas with a Hawaian band, but has no idea what's played in this kind of outfit, and neither do I to be honest.

Does anyone have any expertise in this area? Other than the basic marcha, what fits Hawaian music?

Alafia El Boni!
I hope that you are well and in an abundance of blessings mi pana!

I'm not sure exactly what music is played on the island, not ever having been there myself, but I'm sure that they play more than just "Tiny Bubbles" :D

Here is a web site where you might be able to establish a link-up with someone who could explain the music to you from the island itself:
BTW they have what looks like some killer congas listed, a bit too expensive for me, but beautiful nonetheless!

Aloha El Boni,

I've heard local Conguero's use a 3/2 Tumbao pattern and also a basic Samba pattern in Traditional Hawaiian Music. Modern Island Music, which was firsrt referred to as "Jawaiian" is based off a Reggae type beat, which should not be too hard to follow.

Aloha Onile,

So you've had a chance to visit the Volcano Percussion Site! Fabulous Drums! As are those Fat Conga's that you proudly own. The price on the Volcano's are not too far off of what you paid for your Fat's.
Attached is a pic of Volcano's latest Drums. On the left is a 14 inch "Boomba", in the middle is a 10 1/2 inch Requinto, and on the right is the 13 1/4 Super Tumba. These are Made in Hawaii " PHAT'S". You should hear these Drums, they sound as Fat as the belly's on these Drums. Thunderous!

Aloha, maSSivdrums

Alafia and Aloha brother MaSSivdrums!
I hope that you are well my friend!

Yes, I believe I found the link to volcano percussion on this site one day. Bro! Those are some really beautiful looking drums, and the fact that they are supertumbas makes them even more inviting to me. I love the really fat drums with the phat bottom sound.

Yes, I have a set of Fats, I actually paid $2,350 for the set of 3 way back in 95'. I don't know if Rick Buschemi is still making congas like that, his wife is always telling me that he's too busy making the cajons and batajons. Oh well, life goes on.

Back to your drums, brotha they are beautiful. I can only imagine how beautiful they sound. How much do they weigh? I have a set of LP Palladiums that are extremely impratical, they are huge and weigh around 52lbs or so. I've only taken them out on a few gigs. I recently ordered a set of three Gonbops and have only recieved one Supertumba as of yet.

The Fats are really light surprisingly enough, but yet they are my most expensive drums so I only use them on really cool Salsa gigs!

Thanks for the pics, I will be retiring from my day gig (Social Worker for the City of Phoenix) next year in September, I'm thinking of treating myself to a really nice set of drums as a gift, these (Volcano drums) are really at the top of my list!

Many blessings my friend!

Muchisima gracias, maSSivdrum & Onile

Great to get an answer direct from the island itself. I've forwarded it on to my guy with the gig. And those Volcanoes sure look incredible (though I'm unfortunately not in the market right now).

¡Pa’ nada mi hermano B!
I hope that you are well and in an abundance of blessings!

I had two gigs this weekend in which I used my Fats, and both nights I grew even fonder of them! They not only look and sound incredible, they are the lightest (weight) drums that I own. My back appreciates this when I come driving up into my garage and unload at 1:00 a.m. or so in the morning!
(I still have my eyes on those volcanos though!)

Glad you found what you were looking for El Boni!

¡Suerte!
Onile!
