10th annual Explorations in Afro-Cuban Dance & Drum Program

Registration is now open for the 10th annual Explorations in Afro-Cuban Dance & Drum Program (a.k.a Cuba Camp) held at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. The dates are July 24 – July 30, 2005. This years faculty feature Lazaro Galarraga (Song), Francisco Aguabella, Sandy Pérez, Jesus Diaz, Michael Spiro, and John Santos (percussion), and José Francisco Barroso, Susana Arenas, and Reynaldo Gonzalez (dance), as well as Mark Lamson, Chris (Flaco) Walker, and David Peñalosa rounding out our staff. We are offer 5 levels of drum classes and 3 levels of dance classes. All of our faculty accompany dance classes. Hearing Lazaro Galarraga and Francisco Aguabella playing everyday together is something I’m really looking forward to. Many evenings are spent hearing the faculty play rumba at house parties, or dancing salsa. The program ends with a performance featuring our entire faculty. If you are interested and for more information, go to http://www.humboldt.edu/afrocuban

Hello all! Just got back from my West Coast trip, which included the 10th annual Afro-Cuban Dance, song, and drum workshops at Humboldt State...
I learned a bunch of new Tres Dos, and Salidor dialogues for Guaguanco from David Penelosa - (aside, how do you get the ~ to fit over the n?) He's a fun and great instructor!
The drumming over the week's course was great especially at the level four practices, and at the parties!

If you can't afford it,, consider starting to save monthly right now!!! Trust me! It's well worth the cost and energy!!

Hi Dave,

Sounds like lot's of fun!

While holding down the Alt key on your keyboard, type in 164 then let go and you should get ñ. This should be done while keeping a constant 3/2 rumba clave with your left foot, I'm kidding!!!!!!!

Saludos,

Jorge Ginorio

Well, if anyone had aspirations of going this year, 2006, past workshop attendees just got this e-mail from Howie - the coordinator of the Humboldt Afro-Cuban Dance, Drum, and Song workshops. It's NOT going to be running this year!

Hi Everyone, I am writing to let you know that I will be canceling the Afro-Cuban workshops for this summer only, so that I may spend more time supporting my wife Christa and our baby which is due around March 21st. In addition to teaching at Humboldt State University, I also work at two high schools, and I am back as a student working on my
teaching credential. All of this combined has left me without time and energy to organize this year. Whatever little time I have must go to supporting my family during this very special time. I hope you understand. Carl Hansen, Ward Angles, Humboldt State University, and I are fully committed to keeping this workshop going, and we look forward to another decade or more beginning in the summer of 2007.
Please spread the word.
All the best,

Howie Kaufman

I've never heard of anything similar to the Arcata program happening elsewhere in the US. Maybe this is a good year to go to Cuba?
