I have djembe background and there if you don't retract hand fast enough and sound gets muted, which is what you rarely want. On congas it's different.

I have a problem that I think of what I play as series of single hits, but actually I could hit with both hands in the same time and for heal/toe, closed slap and muted tones it makes much sense. It is also possible to play on 2 drums in the same time.

So I would want to separate my hands, allow them to strike drum independently and make melody together not sequencialy.

Could you suggest some exercises? What I use is H/T tohgether with closed slaps and playing by placing one hand conga other in tumba only. But there must be something better ;)

Yeah and I treat flams, ruffs/drags as single strokes which just happen to have help from other hand. Same for closed slaps.
