I have Percussion Studio with all parts of the rumbas I'm learning. I mute the one I want to practice or play any combo of the components and play along to that.

Depending on what you are learning, clave is better than the beat as accompaniment imo.

I mostly do folkloric claves and bell patterns. It's attached to an amplifier so I can make
it as loud as I like. When I want it to be quiet I use earphones.

Plus, I bet the added sensation of "feeling" like your in a band using the drum machine assists a little in your overall performance?

I sometimes play the clave or bell patterns with my foot pedal as I play congas.
I also use Fruity Loops and have programmed clave and bells to practice along with.

It mainly helps me to get used to the many claves that are in folkloric rhythms like Arara, Iyesa, Makuta, Comparsa, Abakua, etc. These rhythms
don't always use the common rumba clave or 6/8 bell.

If you tap your foot in our rumba group you run the risk of getting your toes trodden on.

Here's a sample practice clip I made with Fruity Loops.
I'm still fine-tuning the conga sounds.
