That Vacunao is a great album, but I haven't heard that album by John Santos your recommending,
I'm going to have to check it out now, Dave. I have another of Santos's albums but not that one.

Lisa,

Myself being a Pop/Rock/R&B/Funk/Latin Rock percussionist, here are some suggestions:

- Santana (Carlos Santana)
- Malo (Jorge Santana)
- Motown (Temptations, Stevie Wonder, the late Marvin Gaye, etc.)
- Tower of Power (some songs)
- Doobie Brothers (some songs)
- Ray Cooper (percussionist for Eric Clapton, Elton John, Phil Collins, etc.)
- Joe Jackson Band (Sue Hadjopoulos--conguera, timbalera & bongocera)
- Earth, Wind & Fire (David Romero--multi-percussionist)

Sue Hadjopoulos (Greek/Puerto Rican) is one of my favorite percussionists. She could be an inspiration/influence for you.

All the best,

Yet another Eco-tone sighting. Sad that so many people used to have them back in the day and these days, aside from Dario's (which I don't even think he has anymore), you just never see them.

Oh yeah, "Rare Earth", of course! Thanks for sharing, Barrie!

Too bad that one can't hear the sound of the congas, as well as the timbales, on this video--something that's happened more than occasionally with rock/pop percussion where it seems to play a mere subordinate role to kit drums.

I agree! It seems that the congas only provide a fill, or accent and are underutilized. But, maybe, that is what partly separates the genres too?

Manny what are you doing rootin through my record collection! I'm guessing we both may have had "Salsbury Hill" as our prom theme song,

I'll also throw early to mid career James Taylor into the mix. Lots of congas and not as background but front and centre in the mix.

Burke,

Dang, you caught me red-handed with my hand inside your cookie jar, didn't you? And, as you can see from my short artist list above, I didn't even have enough time to rummage through your entire record collection! :) :D

Sorry, not "Salsbury Hill" (by Peter Gabriel). Our high school class was older. I'm not even sure that we had a prom theme song. There were too many great Motown songs to single one out! :)

You're absolutely right, James Taylor, one of my favorite vocalists! I can still hear in my head the congas on "You've Got A Friend".

Thanks for the laugh and the nostalgia,
