First track of Rejino cd ( Bembe )

Postby flaco999 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 3:18 pm

Can anyone tell me more about this rythem from the Rejino cd ( Track 1 )

A guy I'm playing with says it's "bakoso" , I'm not convinced of that.
Does it come from havanah/matanzas ????

It goes like this: guataca x-x-xx-x-x-x
cachimbo os-ss-os-soo
Mula B-oo--B-oo--
Caja O-BB-s--BBs-
Another one I'm curious about goes like this: guataca x-x-xx-x-x-x
cachimbo ossossossoss
Mula o--o--o--o--
caja o--Bs-B--Bs-
This Bembe is ( track 4) of the Rejino cd
Both caja parts are played with the stick in the right hand I believe?
And the slaps on the first tracks caja part are struck against the wood of the drum I think?

any info on this stuff would be much appreciated.
Thanx Ronnie

That first rhythm looks very similar to a bembe that Sandy Perez
taught my class. He calls it a "meta" bembe, meaning it is for the male.
It is a Matanzas style.

I can double check my transcription later when I get home.

Yeah, you're right, Geordie. It's fundamentally the same as what Sandy taught us as the bembe rhythm to be played for the meta (male) orishas. The only substantive difference might be that Sandy plays those last two cachimbo opens as muffs.

Great! Looks like I'm going to have to give that Regino track another listen.

Thanks guy's!!!

I kind of had a feeling that it wasn't bakoso.

I think I learned bakoso as

guataca x-x-xx-x-x-x
cachimbo Bs-BooBs-Boo
Mula B-oBs-B-oBs-
caja o-tBB-BtBB- w/ hands

Is this bakoso?

I believe Flaco999 is referring to an instructional CD the late Regino Jiménez recorded back in 1996, entitled Wemilere: Study Guide for Afro-Cuban Percussion.

It was produced by Regino and Scott Wardinsky, and available through them.

The no longer batadrums.com website carried it for awhile.

Hope this helps,

JG

Yes , the Rejino cd I have is the Afro Cuban study guide. I had it burned so I didn't get a track list , which is why I'm not so sure of some of the rythems played.
James was cool enough to show me Meta which he learned from Sandy Perez and I'm convinced that it's the same rythem on the first track with some subtle differences.
If anyone knows what that 4th track was please let me know, it goes
guataca x-x-xx-x-x-x
cachimbo ossossossoss
mula o--o--o--o--
caja o--Bs-B--Bs-

Like I said , a guy I'm playing with sayed Meta was bakoso, and i kinda felt like that wasn't the case.
Good thing we didn't break that one out for Yemaya or Ochun , right? LOL That would have been pretty embarrasing.
Everyone thanks again for your insight.

I don't know what that rhythm is ....but surely there is someone here who has
that cd in their collection and could post the track listing.

Looks like a very interesting CD I'd be interested in it. Too bad it's discontinued, and batadrums.com
is closed.

Ronnie,

Track 4 in the Yoruba section on Regino's CD is listed as Bembé Bakoso.

Hope this helps,

Thank You Jorge!!!

I learned bakoso from John Amira like that with the exception that the mula played BtBBooBtBBoo , and the caja part used hands.
If anyone has the whole track list , let me know.
Thanx

We just went over Bakoso last week, lots of similarities to what everyone else has down
for the rhythm.
Cachimbo HSTHOOHSTHOO
Mula OSSOSSOSSOSS
Caja O-tBB-B-tBB-

campana can be x-x-xx-x-x-x
or -xx-xx-x-x-x

Flaco.
but you also wrote out
I think I learned bakoso as

guataca x-x-xx-x-x-x
cachimbo Bs-BooBs-Boo
Mula B-oBs-B-oBs-
caja o-tBB-BtBB- w/ hands

has the same cachimbo as what I wrote out.
I was told this bakoso can be played for bembe and guiro.
I'm not trying to say the version I got is the only bakoso.
I think they are probably all versions of bakoso, they have enough similarities.
