What is the 6/8 rythm on congas do you prefer ?

Well brother Laurent,..to me it would be in relation of the musical phrase of the rest of the rhythms/section and which is the parameter which I would like to incorporate for the interaction with them.Dr. Zaragemca

for me, i love the 6/8 bembe. i play it on 3 drums (quinto, conga + tumba)

I would be very curious to see or hear that orchestrated palo.
Could you share it with us?

Never heard of yanvalou. Is it Cuban?

My favourite lately is fast and driving Afro blue type stuff with split hands.
Also love playing bata adaptations of Ñongo.

The fluidity of 6/8 is always great fun, it seems that one can play faster with out sounding clutered or overly busy.

You set me a hell of a task, I searched on line and just could not find good examples of Yanvalou for you. I dare not load what I got for fear of copyright issues.
Yanvalou is part of the Rada rhythms family of Haiti.
The best I find is the link to these samples on Amazon by Bonnie Devlin.

When I refer to orchestrated, I meant when you play it in a traditional group with each person playing their part on one drum be it requinto, quinto, conga etc

How's things in good 'ol London? I am there in soon and have already booked up a two hour session with Daniel Mazarro over at PlanetDrum in Camden. I will ask him if I can post the wrap up summary on youtube.

Hi Derbeno,

I have to change my profile, I have moved to Rio since last September.
Say hi to Daniel for me I used to be a regular at the Sunday rumba sessions in East London. Try to go if you can, many of the cats in London are hanging there.

Could you write down the orchestrated Palo, I love this rhythm, I know the various parts but would be interested in a good three congas transcription.

I will check those links you posted.

Hi all,
I thought I'd just point out for those who are not aware, the Haitian Rada system (yanvalou rhythm) comes from the Fon ethnic group of present-day Benin and Togo. In Cuba Fon music is known as Arara.

Welcome CongaTick,as 'Huerocongero' said,there are some patterns which I teach for the purpose of getting my students proficient in the 6/8 structure,but I would use it an articulation in relation of what is the musical phrase of the bass line and other percussion instruments involved.Dr. Zaragemca
