Folkloric rumba from 1969. Originally released on Gema (3072), this vintage Cuban release by composer/percussionist Justi Barreto is considered to be a classic by many. Fantastic percussion and excellent sound. With "Campana Tin Tin," "Guaguanco Sublime," "Amalia, Amalia," and "A Nueva York."

Following this thread has been as informative for me as it has been for you. With all this new information that I've just picked up on I will be searching the local libraries and also looking at interlibrary catalogues. I have spent a fair amount of money on purchasing CDs and other media only to be sadly disappointed in many cases. And I'll probably continue to do so because I think the pleasure of finding the gems among the rocks is worth it.
The massive Descarga catalogue is where I go when I know exactly what to buy. If they don't have it, well... keep trying the public libraries and other sources to narrow down the search. There really is so much out there, and personal taste is a major factor as well.

I always go back to the first recordings of folkloric rumba. The first two records by Los Muñequitos and Los Papines (1956) reveal the archetypal quinto phrases that the more modern and busier phrases are based upon. You can find them at descarga.com (see below).

Here is a nice group of Rumberos doing one of my favorite songs. The name of which I don't know. Can anyone help with that? Is this song on any recordings? I love the version from the Calle 54 video. Puntillia's and Pedro Martinez's harmonizing is simply beautiful. These guys don't do a bad job either.

The song is called "Compay Galletano" (lyrics are here.) I am pretty sure it's on the Calle 54 soundtrack.

That song is on Eddie Bobe's Central Park Rumba album played on cajon.

Also, Clave y Guaguanco did a real nice version of it as well titled Maileo.
