Earliest known Guarapachangueo (Was: Los Munequtios Vacunao)

Postby guarachon63 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 1:01 am

Just happened to be listening again to this album "Cuba: Les danses de Dieux" on Harmonia Mundi and noticed that the guaguancó is very much in the early guarapachangueo "Chintos style." The notes say the recordings were made between 1985-88 so while they aren't quite "official" —they are clearly field recordings— they may well be the earliest recordings of that style.

The disc is long out of print, here's a link to the file:

I've got that one, nice album. That "guaguanco" track is credited to members of the "Yambu" ensemble in Havana with soloists Oscar Hernandez and Martin Ramos Morejon. The album describes itself as recordings from two field expeditions, one in 1985 the other in 1988.

Certainly a guarapachangeo feel to that guaguanco.
