Another variation on the ubiquitous Spiro Theme. I use this one but with the first two open tones on the tumba. If you want the Spiro notation I can post it.
This chap also has a straight non swing version on his channel.

The rhythms we call funk on drumsets and in American culture music...is nothing new ! The funcky grooves like from James Brown etc have roots in other cultures where dance music & drumming has been a daily part of culture for centuries ! Cuban & Brazilian Bata drum rhythms have these funky rhythms and congas can easily play the basic American funk groove. The issue is that funky grooves need to remain funky and not be all over the place trying to re invent the groove while the band is locked into the funk feel. If you were to study the evolution of pop music trends in America, you can identify grooves that come from Jazz, Blues , Gospel, & the European sources in western music history, and suddenly you will see a relationship & time line of dance music grooves in Rhythm & Blues & rock, in 4/4 time which was invented in Cuba and called Cha Cha Cha, named after the sound of the dancers feet on the dance floor. The brighter Cha Cha Cha tempo derives from a slower Cuban folk dance from the mountains which is also often melencholy. This slower Cha Cha Cha was called Guajira ~ named after the women country folk from the foot hills & mountains. For comparison ~ Billie Gene by Michael Jacksion is based on a Cha Cha Cha, even the string section arrangements are written in Clave & sounds very Cuban. Smooth Operator by Sade & Heard it through the grapevine by Marvin Gaye are slow Cha Cha Cha or Guajira in essence. Hand Jive bt Bo Didley is a rock standard and is just a vamp on the Cuban Clave beat ! The point is that Cultures from Africa that were brought to the new world, brought thier music & drumming cultures with them & in most cases it survived and cross mingled with other African cultures in ways it did not do in Africa. The Americas was the melting pot for mant rich cultural fusions. American pop music & jazz has always been heavily influenced by this. Thats why American music was unique and is now sharing these new music influences with the world. To study the music of America, you have to study the history of Western culture music & the many music fusions that were created in many new world countries from a fusion of yet many more imported cultures since the discovery of America. Africa & Asia , Europe & indigenious peoples all contribute, Even from Spain alone, European cultures from the days of Rome & the Moors of North Africa and pre dark ages cultures have fused. Spain & Afro Cuba are the rich crossroads that had eons of history. American Black music was more home grown in the slave era of the south but has always been exposed to the cultures of other slave cultures in the new world, .So...in closing, Jazz is NOT a unique American ( U.S.A ) art form. It is just one branch of a huge family tree that seeded in the whole of Las Americas ! Is that Funky or what ! ?

Loving all of the clips that have been posted so far - though how about the UK powerhouse that is Snowboy - here's a clip of The Perceptions...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onOPxsxfA50

Also in the interest of self-promotion, here's a couple of mine from a few years back - first is a nice loose marcha-based feel. Unfortunately I have no footage of me actually playing it, but the video does feature a nice montage of one of our trips to Japan

Second is a quick sampler of a couple of tracks - both use the same feel (inspired by the 'What's Going On' groove) but at a couple of different intensities...

Cheers all - and stay funky!

If you compress the video clip on your computer before uploading to Youtube, you won't get so much of a syncronisation issue when Youtube converts the video format. Free software such as Handbrake is good for this.... :)
