In fact you CAN reach a reduction of nasty overtones
by hanging a piece of sound-absorbing material into
the conga shell. Well, it does not have be a T-shirt,
nor do you have to take the skin off. And besides, there
is always the danker of killing the tone!
But apart from that, it works, especially with fiberglass congas.
Peace & drum

I tried this when i made the mistake of buying those remo crimplock heads (WORST HEADS ON THE PLANET). A t-shirt is overkill unless you jjust want to do some interesting sampling of odd sounds. I found that if i took an old towel and tear a very small piece that it works.

It may seem odd but it is alot better than that ringing.

I have used this method with several congas with success. The amount of material used to suspend inside the drum will vary from drum to drum. I use paper towel and spring clips so I can easily vary the amount of dampening. This does not work with all overtone issues but it will work with many of them.

Enjoy your drums and drumming.

Saw this on the Drumskulls site, PM Percussion. Much more elaborate but I hear it works very well.
