Depends on what your playing, where your playing it, and who your playing it with...
One of the biggest realizations I made in playing rumbas, etc..., is that you will get a lot more playing time and respect if you can adjust on the fly and play however a rhythm is being played.
Don't get stuck on one pattern, or part, try to learn as many as possible.

Thanks, I had no idea that the 6/8 was one of those rhythms that has no basic standard. I thought there was a basic rhythm, like tumbao, plena, or guaguanco. It makes sense, because I think Glen Caruba's 6/8 goes great with jazz fusion, but I don't really like it in itself. I love Poncho Sanchez's 6/8 by itself, really cool. Does anyone got any cool ones that sound great just by themselves?
Godspeed,
Jesse

6/8 describes a rhythmic meter, there are many 6/8 rhythms. Rumba Columbia, Bembe, etc, are all rhythms in 6/8.

As simple as you explained it to me; believe or not, it never dawned on me. Thanks, for the new perspective.

Some of my favorite 6/8's are Palo, Columbia and Bembe. From another post, I really dig Palo. It usually takes the group a bit to get their head around the cross meter feel, but when the rhythm is rippin at tempo it soooo much fun.

Columbia is great that way as well, although I prefer playing lead on the tumba to the quinto, just seems more grounded and solid to me.

Not hard to get confused when some books just call something '6/8' or sometimes 'afro-cuban' [6/8] - seen it [and just did a quick search to find some] ... pretty useless term used that way.

What is commonly known in North American Latin jazz as 6/8 or Afro-Cuban 6/8, is most often a band adaptation of the rhythm bembé. When one includes the batá repertoire, there are over one hundred 6/8 Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms. You are not limited to band adaptations of bembé.

Wow, again, thanks for expanding my knowledge. I have been dup into believing that there was one standard rhythm.
