Johnny... In the mano secreta movement you noted is "Tp" one stroke - both the tip and palm falling on the drum at the same time?

IMHO - this should be a "sticky" thread for Johnny that stays at the top of this section.

If there are other well accomplished instructors on the board, it makes sense if they have a sticky as well. Otherwise folks need to go searching the forum for them, which doesn't make much sense.

As simple as "P Tp Tp P Tp" looks on paper (online) its not! I remember doing this one with JC, because I was so frustrated that such an exercise that should have been easy wasn't. During the exercise/drill JC corrected me on timing, sound development, lifting hand to early, to late, speed up, faster, now faster, to much palm with right, not enough with the left, your hands are getting to far down on the drum, too tense, relax, speed up, keep your elbows in, you skip the p tone...etc.

The above is why JC is a good instructor, it sounds like boot camp, but it's done with patience and a gentle push. Anyone can show you a pattern (as seen on Youtube), but not everyone can make you a better conga player.

Godspeed!

Thx Johnny,

I need to spend some time writing down the transcribed solo. In my inexperience this sounds like the 3-2 son clave. Does that sound right?

I started out in my early years to learn how to 'play along' with Conga drummers on record.. This is one example..it's Patato playing a 2 drum Tumbao thru the whole tune, uptempo...see if you can also play along with him lick for lick , it's pretty straight ahead .and not that easy to do .......it's on Spotify.com
Cal Tjader tune ORAN from the album Soul Burst

No I haven't actually...he had his few I would say ...breaking up the Guaguanco into a Tumbao was significant to me, as nobody else had done that or since actually..
