Tumba Placement

Greetings everyone,
I was watching a well known conga player, and noticed that his lower tuned drums where left, even though he is a righty. Does anyone do this to, have their tumba to the left, but is a righty? What's your philosophy on that set-up?

What rhythm was he playing?
I do this for a few Folkloric rhythms where I sometimes play two parts for lack of drummers. eg middle and low drum for Asohano. At then end of the middle part my left hand is free and the middle starts again with right so it's an easy choice.

Basically, it is a matter of personal taste where you place you tumba.

Hey thanks for sharing Mike, very interesting and educating.
Derbeno it was Raul Rekow, in his DVD Instruction vid. I noticed that he tends to cut traditional rhymes in half, and on the three side of clave he hits the lowest drum (on left) on the "and" of 2. Has anyone noticed this? I also haven't seen guys having the lowest on the left, he makes it work. Very groove.
