I have played the woodcraft series and they are very solid sounding . what Heads do they have because the meinl woodcraft come with cow skin pretty thick . I have a set of marathon classic with Steer fitted and a mule on the conga and the combination and inmprovment of sound is another level . The pro series are a great drum and very affordable for europeans buying from Thonman de,com .

Thanks for your message. I am a beginner who would like to play atleast a semi pro drum. Do you think this is a good choice for me? Have you ever seen Meinl professional conga stand? Are they strong enough?

I have a set of steely 2 stands and they are great very sturdy , they tend to move a little when Im on the case .
Ive recently started playing seated more and just ordered a set of the LP rubber feet stands .
But yes they are a good choice LP classics are simlar to the pro series but LP prices for drums made at a similar factory in Thailand . Id go for them for a first timer new comer to the Drum you wint go wrong .
Get some tuition with a pro I did it will stop you becoming a pitty patter drummer with bad habbits .
It really depends on how far you want to go with the drum . Im pretty much a new comer I started about 10 months ago and have put lots of hour into mastering the craft .

Good Luck

Thanks again, is this what you just bought? Would this stand fit all Meinl drums?

I bought Luis Conte set at first but i sent it back because i didnt like to sound of it. I decided to spend a little more money and keep it until i become a god player and then i can eighter buy a quinto or sell these meinl pros and buy LP instead.

I have ordered Thomas Cruz conga method dvd to gain some skills. I am in to music too. I have been djing for 18 years and i shared a stage with many top percussionist.

I hope i can allocate enough time for it.

Do you think this stand worth its money?

Thanks Marco

masterdj,

According to Meinl's website,

http://meinlpercussion.com/product....es.html

http://meinlpercussion.com/product....te.html

both Luis Conte and the Professional Series use 2-ply Rubber Wood for the body and True Skin Buffalo Head for the skins. So the 2 models should be basically the same drums except for cosmetics. The Professional Series uses comfort rims and comes in several color choices. The Luis Conte uses traditional rims (black powder-coated) and only comes in natural color.

Most experienced and even professional players (who are not constrained by endorsements) prefer traditional rims over comfort rims. I do, too.

Traditional rims allow easier skin replacements vs. comfort rims. Furthermore, it's theorized that comfort rims add to the ringing sound of certain brands/makes of congas 'cause they provide a built-in sound chamber underneath them.

IMO, since both the Luis Conte and the Professional Series are basically the same congas, except probably for cosmetics, keeping the Luis Conte and changing the skins from the stock (thin) buffalo skin to thick steer, cow or mule would theoretically have made the same desirable improvement in the quality of the sound as it would or did to your replacement Professional Series with upgraded skins.

Not to mention leaving you with some change to buy your conga stands and/or other accessories.

Re: stands, I prefer the Meinl Steely Stands over the LP ones that you described. I've got a couple of the Meinls for my pair of Toca fiberglass beater congas and I'm very happy with them.

Just my 2 cents,

MDJ . the seated stands i meant was these
http://www.thomann.de/gb/lp_637_gummifussset.htm

Also Manny is correct basically the pro are the same wood and skin just a bit more bling.
If your looking for a warmer sound with more sustained tone s and wicked kick ass slaps . you will need to upgrade the skins on any of the Congas made in Thialand with hand picked water buffalo heads ??? .
It really is as simple as that . If you do some reasearch on this forum you will see this is the case .
I literally only changed mine this last few months the steer was fitted 2 weeks ago and allready sound awesome ( I hate that word) lol. :D
The only other thing would be maybe look into buying a set of Islas fom mario . or other en vogue Congas a la Morpec . SOS, etc.......or GonBop/Timba perc. Also take a look at meinl woodcraft .

It depends on what you want really , if its a cutting conga to acompany DJ set Id go for the LP fiberglass and have synth heads fitted , if it your local rumba / salsa the only way to go for me would be Islas or the likes .
Im sure if you scan around on this Forum you will find all the info you nedd bud.

Suave

Hi gus, thank you for your detailed informaion.

I have cancelled my order and asked to have the money back on to my account instead of product exchange with Thomann!!

I found a company in New Jersey, US who sells al LP range for reasonable prisec and they ship to UK.

I dont know how much the shipping cost but you can buy LP classic model for £200 which is great. Even Thomann charges 315 for Lp classic conga.

I think i will go for Lp classic model if i cant afford it i would go for LP matador.

They both have natural rawhead and hav great feedback from all over the world.

What do you think about my new choice? How did it cost to change your drum heads? Do you still use your marathon classics?

Thanks...

Great choice , only thing id be worried abot is mrVAT and customs duty add 37% to prices . itcost m £160 for the new skins i fitted myself with expert guidence from guys on this forum . the difference as meant that im in no hurry to upgrade now Im still learning my craft i use them to play in my local samba group and they cut pretty good in this situation .
I recon thomann de is still your cheapest option , by the time you have paid your duty you could have bought a set of gio`s gallaxy congas .

I didnt know about the custom tax, do you have to pay this amount? They will come via UPS delivery. How the custom can charge me? Send me an invoice?

Masterdj,
the customs office will send you a notice and you´ll have pay that awful lot of money Congadelica has mentioned. At least I had to pay it when I bought an otherwise terrific set of LP vintage bongos from someone in the USA. You are charged when the item you purchased is above a certain price (dunno what it is exactly).
So after all, thomann.de COULD be the better deal for you indeed. You might want to check out musicstore.de as well, they ship internationally too.
If I were you I´d also try to watch out for Meinls at ebay, at least on German ebay there have been some Meinl beauties recently.

Best wishes
Mike

Would you please make it clear for me?

Are you saying that i have to pay the tax when i purchase the drums online so there wont be any hidden cost on top of it.

You paid your tax when you bought the bongo, if you didnt they would charge you anyway by sending you an invoice.

If the drums 450 us dollars how much would i pay on top of it? What is the rate, do you know? I was going to order Meinl pro from Thomann bur i didnt get a god reference for them also LP drums from US cost less if i dont pay tax!!

No, it doesn´t matter if you buy online or otherwise, it´s just that customs authorities charge a certain ADDITIONAL amount of money for imported goods above a certain value no matter what you paid before - as far as I know. I´m not too sure at the moment if this is merely a German phenomenon - you know, bureaucracy plays quite a role here :;):
To give you figures: The bongo I bought was a total of 220 US-$ including shipping. I had to pay 19% tax and an additional 3.2% custom fees on this amount.
So all in all the bongó cost me in EURO: 165,71€ for the bongos and the aforementioned fees which were 23.40€ total.
So all in all I guess it´s somewhat a European kind of tax which would be about 20 percent.
If the drums 450 us dollars how much would i pay on top of it?
So maybe you can figure it out yourself now. The problem is I don´t know about the value of the British pound. In EURO you would have to consider an approximate 50,-€ for the tax charges.
I hope I could be of some help at least.
Mike
