Alafia Abure Trickyricky!
I hope that you are well and in an abundance of holiday blessings my friend!
The whole effort of getting the skin placed on the head (as mentioned in this post), and then cutting the excess is the major part of the process. Once you have done this, you look at the head and decide if it's where you are pleased. Remember that at this point, you should be extremely careful if you plan on tightening or loosening the head. You should only do this to bring the head level (meaning the crown's distance from the playing surface) to where you would like it at.

Once this is done, then sit back and enjoy your craftsmanship, You Have Done It! The drying process starts now, you should not tune the drum for approximately two to three maybe even four days depending on the temperature where you live! I sometimes put my drum in the garage, it's usually hotter in there than anywhere else, but then again.....I live in the desert!

I hope that this is helpful my friend!

Peace!
Onile!

onile,
you know what?? we forgot to mentioned that before mounting the heads. you should tighten the inner plate inside the shell . i have notice that they tent to loosen. thats' what i have experienced in some bongo and conga shell, for that matter also the timbal. tightening the inside nuts on the plates will help strethened the tension on the heads. will help with the sound being more crisp and mellow. of course considering other factors that we already know. feliz año nuevo!!!mi pana !!! ♪ áche!!! franc :)

Here's a trick I learned from an old school cat. Once you have tucked and cut the skin, turn the drum upside down and set it on a plastic garbage bag overnight. This will allow the part where the drum doubles ( between the hoop and the crown) to dry before the playable part of the skin does. This is important because of you leave it upright, the playable portion dries first since it is just one layer, while the other part is folded over. The next day you can turn it over and complete the drying process. Much more even drying, better for the head.

Alafia Abure pcastag!

Wow! That sounds pretty interesting, and innovative. I'll give it a try the next time I mount a new skin.............still waiting for my other two GonBops, I'm changing the heads on them right away. I have three extra skins from Moperc, which I had ordered for them, any day now, any fricken day!

Peace!

Hey, if you're a do it yourselfer, you should contact Bill Hereford, 1-800-858-4384, he sells whole skins for about 100.00 , I was able to get enough for 7 congas, bongo AND enough for the dog toys! Excellent sounding skins, and he'll sell you whatever thickness you desire.

Alafia Mis Hermanos del tambor!
Espero que todo este bien con ustedes!

You know, I purchased a half hide some years ago, it was an experience! If you plan on doing so, make sure to have some "sheet metal" sissors (tijeras) to cut out your pieces, it'll make it much easier. I actually paid around the same amount, $100 for the half though.

Goza!
