The differences in the synthetic heads actually are the overtones and projection. Evans heads tend to mute overtones. Remo Fyberskins 3, perhaps the most used, provide overtones and more volume. Remo NuSkyns are Remo's answer to Evans, so practically are like the Evans, less overtones and less volume besides the fact that NuSkyns were the first synthetic heads with traditional rings like natural heads. Remo just came out with "tucked" (with traditional rings) Fyberskins but I've checked them out and do not have as much overtones and volume like the original Fyberskins. For your information, I was just at the NAMM convention and Remo has a new conga head that is coming out. Could'nt check it out because they did not have installed in any congas but they look like natural heads with tradional rings and everything. We'll see what will be the features of this new head.
How you make the decision of what head to use? If you want warmer sound sacrifying in volume, specially for live situations, is Evans and Remo NuSkyns. If you don't mind the overtones and want volume use Remo Fyberskins. For live situations, Remo Fyberskins tend to be used more often making them the most used for that reason..Saw a lot of congueros getting Evans when they first came out but eventually switched back to Remo Fyberskins. Remo NuSkyns appear to provide better sound that Evans.
So in summary...depends what you want in your sound....
