I need new skins

I am need of some new skins for my LP classics. I currently have evans synthetic mounted, and although I like the fact that I don't have to retune everytime the wheather changes (which believe me its everyday in austin), but I just don't like the sound or feel of the synthetic. I'de love to put some mule skins on them, but $60 a drum is more than I can afford. Does anyone have any used skins in decent condition that they would be able to sell me for a good price. Or does anyone know a good place online to buy quality skins for cheap?

i know what you mean about tunning and detuning, i have to do it every time i play my drums which is also about every day, but im not complaining. i live in Corpus christi and the humidity is pretty much always above 90% and there are days when the tempeture difference is about 40 degrees from the morning to the evening.
you might want to keep your eyes open on ebay. every now and then a few new or used conga head are up for auction. or check with a local cattle ranch here in Texas, you might be able to find cow hide. i had bought new skins for my drums and used the old ones on my bongos, i think most of us have other plans with the old skins rather than selling them. take care and let us know if you find something.

Email Robert Felcher in San Diego at [email]lopmus@cox.net.[/email] He gets his skins from the old Universal people in Chicago. Pretty good quality American steer and he checks them for eveness. I paid $40 ea. for mine and love 'em. I'm refinishing a set of old Gon Bops and got these heads.

Hi Deadhead,

Why would you like mule skins? I don't know that much about skins, I'm just curious about the different sound qualities of each type of skin. I have an LP Ardiente tumba and conga set that came with natural skins, although I don't know what kind of animal it came from. I put an Evans synthetic skin on the conga - loud but metallic sounding. Anyway, I've heard that mule skins are more expensive than other skins. Why is that?

salpica, I've never used the mule heads myself so I couldn't tell you anything about them, theres alot of info on this board if you look at old posts taht can help you out.

I have a set of LP Ardientes (conga and quinto) and an old LP (NJ palisades Park from the 70's) fiberglass tumba. Changed the original buffalo Ardiente skins to mule and put mule on the tumba. If you practice daily and gig fairly regularly, you will appreciate the incredible difference in the sound of the mules compared to the original skin on those Ardientes. They bring those tubs to a different level once they're tuned right and assuming one has the technique to make them sing. Isaac at JCR is the pro who set me up. If you are at least an intermediate level player you will not regret an investment in mules.

I noticed that LP Hand Picked heads come in 2 different types. If I remember correctly from a post on this board the see-through darker tan heads are water buffalo, but I just put a Handpicked on my tumba the other day and it is not transparent like the others and is a lighter tan, almost white. Did LP change skin types or something, it seems like the older heads are the lighter colored and the newer heads are the transparent? Anyone know the difference?
