Whats up with this Remo Kick Conga?

So I keep seeing this Remo Kick Conga showing up on ebay, something I wasn't seeing until very recently, and I'm on ebay everyday. Is this a new item? Has anyone played it? To me the concept seems cool, but it just seems like it would sound horrible and nothing like a conga. Seems like another poor excuse for an ethnic drum from remo. I could be wrong though. Just my opinion, but remo needs to stick to what they do best, and thats heads. their world percussion has yet to do anything for me.

I think i read somewhere that it was made by a Trilok Gurtu's idea.
Propably fun to have a new sounds and grooves in your setup, but i don't think you could use it just as conga only.

I saw an ebay posting about a month ago for an old Gon Bops version of this thing. I thought it was custom made, but I guess not. The conga was definitly a vintage california gon bops, does anyone know if they were producing these back in the day? I believe it ended up selling for somewhere around $650.

The Gon Bops version you saw was someone's customized conversion of
a Gon Bop tambora - refitted with floor tom legs and a reversed bass drum
kick pedal. Probably sounds way better than the Remo one.

The Remo conrtaption is probably a discontinued closeout that drum shops
are pedalling ( pardon the pun ) on ebay. That's why its so visible now.
It's got a standard floor tom
head underneath, so you could play a bass/bomba note without
having to set up a separate drum. It was designed by Indian Percussionist Trilok Gurtu
for his own use - Indian/Fusion jazz. It doesn't stand up well
as a great conga. It's kind of an update to the old "Cocktail" drum
set up, where there's no room on the stage and you need to minimize.
Trilok rarely used a conga sound to begin with, so it worked well
enough for him. I would save my money for
the real deal - these would be dissapointing to a true conguero.

I'm happy with my custom 16" kick drum next to my congas. This thing is the stupidest inovation I've seen yet, I bet its made out of acousticon too or whatever that crappy pressure molded fiber material is that they use. Remo continues to dissapoint.

Well, I see it as a challenging objective. I'm sure this instrument is not for some sort of the traditional music, it's maybe for jazz, fusion, world music perhaps for some tricky shots or I'm wrong... Don't really care...
My friend is way into the Fender Stratocaster guitars, all other Xtra new looks and sounds guitars he calls GENERIC S..T But hey, whatever suits him...

If it is spirit within the groove and love bursting out, I'm sure you can also make it sound good.

I own one. I use it as a kick for my Jazz set-up. My 26" kick has to much power, so in a smaller set-up it works well. I don't use it as a conga. For my application it works great. I wouldn't buy one expecting to use it as a conga alone.

Thanks for the review KKonga. Does the conga part sound anything like a conga at all? or is it more like a floor tom sound, played with your hands? Are you able to get good sounding slaps?

You're 26'' bas drum must be one fat spider!!! With formere band we recorded drumset with 26'' bas drum and it was really good...

Yes, as deadhead asked, how conga sounds like?

Pimpi---My 26" is one fat spider---DH---It sounds somewhat like a conga but the bottom head has an echo to it. I usually don't play synthetic heads so the slaps don't sound right to me. I only use it as a kick and leave the conga head tuned low. I do like the kick feature and it sounds good. I would recommend it in a small kit/percussion set-up. :O
