Conga Stands - slipping!

Ive been playing the fiberglass LP potato series congas on a standup toca stand and the stand has been slipping.

I figured it was either that the stand was cheap or the congas were too heavy or a combination of the two.

Does anyone know if wood congas are typically a good deal lighter than fiberglass?

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I would have thought wood is heavier? Not sure..
But I experienced that and concluded that the stand just could'nt handle the Congas.. Wouldn't want that happening in a live situation.. Prefer to sit anyway..

I have a patato.. fiber is lighter that wood.

You can add some straps to the stand maybe...

Dunno about Potato models, but my fiberglass galaxies weighed a ton! Probably twice as much as my classics did.

I used stands for a while, I had gibraltar low baskets that sucked big time, they constantly collapsed on themselves and the design was piss poor to say the least. Seting up your congas in a formation that you want is not easy with those stands due to the odd shape and protruding parts. I would highly suggest against them, I use gibraltar for all other hardware and love it, can't comment on their other conga stands as I havn't used them. I eventally gave up on stands all together, they just get in the way in my opinion. But if you're a standing player then you're in a different situation. Check out the LP stands, I havn't used them, but it would make sense that a Pro LP model drum would fit an LP stand. Good luck!

Try a new stand before replacing the congas.
fiberglass is lighter than wood.

yeah I wouldn't replace my congas purely based on weight, I was thinking about switching to wood anyway because I think with fiberglass you lose that richness in tone that makes that warm wood tone so great.

I guess thats the tradeoff you have to make when you play fiberglass, you get either a bright tone or a warm one and with fiber your on the bright end of the spectrum.

I like fiberglass, they still sound good!
I got a vintage LP fiberglass, because I was
sick of hauling my heavy wood Matador around..
The LP sounds better than a lot of wood drums, mostly I
think because the skin is so broken in, and is
a nice high qulaity aftermarket form the looks of it....

in my opinion a good ol basked stand are best. i use
a meinl steely and it works great, whenever i do use it, which is not often.
it may take longer to set up if you take it apart but, it will be able to handle any conga weight. im not a big
fan of stands that require brackets on the actual drum.
just my preference.
