Hi Mike!
If you wanna upgrade your drums, imo go with the mules!
I don't think that they cost much more than the cowhide.
I don't remeber exactly how much I payed for my mules from Cali (because I bought some bells and other stuff too directly at JCR, so no shipping costs), but they sound great! Ask Isaac how much they'ld definitely cost you incl. shipping and then decide (maybe Isaac can give you a better price ;-)
All the best,
Tom

Thanks for the input, Thomas,

and yes, I really want to upgrade my quinto, which is why I´ve made up my mind and contacted Isaac for some mule skin.

I´m looking forward to the deal greatly, because I believe everybody
that the mule skins by JCR via Isaac are a real improvement
or rather: THE REAL THING
And I deeply trust in expertise of the kind Isaac has to offer. I got a very quick answer regarding the thickness already (THANKS, ISAAC! :) ) .
So the skin should not be too thin on the quinto. And surely it requires some patience ´til the skin has broken in,
but who cares if the sound is going to be
a mul-ion times better :D
The difference to standard skins is like night and day, as Isaac put it...

Mike,

All three of my drums have Isaac mules on them: an old LP fiberglass tumba from the 70's, and two Ardiente tubs, and gotta tell ya, those mules -- when you tune them right (and it takes a bit to learn how) they make the room vibrate. My hands on those mules feels like my fingers caressing the skin of a welcoming woman. The connection is beyond tactile. Would I give up family for my mules? I'm ashamed to say I would even consider asking the question.

Oh... Sounds quite promising :;):

Be careful ´bout your family, though - who should you pass your beautiful drums on to ?
All I can say is even my two boys always pick my better congas for a session (and I´m sometimes getting grey hair on that)!

But all in all, Congatick, you have just proven that Isaac´s skins really kick ....

Saludos Hermanos
Mike, i dont have too much expirience with mule skins but, i do have moperc with cow skin.
cow skin has very little or no overtones when tuned correctly.
moperc sell their congas with north american cow skin and they also sell the skins

a 20" disc of cow skin will cost you $60.

i know its a bit pricy but, if the overtones bother you that much looks like youll have to go with a mule, or cow skin.

good luck

oz

Hi Oz,

well, I´ve just ordered an 18" mule skin disc from Isaac!

The price is .... Well, let´s put it in German: Der Preis ist heiss  To be honest, it´s 66$ plus shipping but I believe every inch of it is worth the price...!!!

As you suggest cowhide:

On reskinning: I´ve thought about upgrading a Matador 11,75" conga by mounting cowhide (or steer - where is the difference?) - what do the others think?
BTW The sound is pretty good already, even with the LP skins!

At least cowhide is not as pricey as mule. As I said before, about 30€, in other words half the price, but most likely not the same quality as mule.

:) Yeah....

I cain´t wait till the skin is here...!

BTW, Tom, shipping was another 30$, but if you consider 73€ all in all, for a top quality skin vs. 40€ I wasted on a really bad cowhide two years ago it´s not too much.

This has been taught to me by an old master.

If you have overtones or if the conga start sounding dead then undo the nuts completely to hand loose and put it in the hot sun for a whole day, keep an eye on it to make sure the nuts remain loose.

Retune and you will be surprised by the results

Thanks, I know this as a valuable method..

Yes, I tried this out , but it wouldn´t help much with the Giovanni Quinto.
Changing the skin to mule is the thing I put great hopes in now, especially when I consider the input in that direction.

Thanks again everybody!
