What a strange animal! My first thought is: "If that was a good idea, why arn't we all playing drums that look like that today?"

Perhaps the manufacturer gives up on producing/selling them before enough really even get out there to speed their sales up via word-of-mouth? I mean, if sales are initially slow because it's a new (and expensive) item, then they may just discontinue before ever reaching real success in sales. Then, of course, other manufacturers look at that and say "no way will we attempt to tread where others failed".

My theory only.

And a perfectly good theory too.

I guess the only way to know would be to try/buy them - unless someone else has tried them in the past.

I wonder if the "Compact Congas" might also end on ebay as a vintage item someday?

I think if that ever happened, it would be due to a different reason-- mainly the market might get so saturated with them that used ones are easily obtainable and new sales go down tubes, thus causing a discontinuation of production. Obviously that never happened with the Gonga's!

I have played a pair of them years ago and thought the sound of the Gonga was excellent, very close to a full size Gon Bop, maybe not as loud but with good tone.

Problem is they look so funky, one of those things where you wouldn't be caught dead seen with them.

They have added them again.

Interesting!

Looks like the sides are more angled on the new ones than on the older ones.
