Hi guys, On the subject of egg shaped drums - here's a drum of mine that's a just a little 'out of round' from Zimbabwe, Southern Africa. This drum has a thick skin, with a wonderful deep and resonant sound. It's carved out of a single piece of wood. No ringing overtones on this one! ciao Pavlo
i have only one gon bop that is a bit out of round - ever so slight. it is a 11.5 mahogany. there are so many drums that have gone sideways, no pun intended, from mostly temperature changes. on the east coast and in the middle of parts of the u s it seem the worst of all. i am not sure what people can do the protect their drums from extreme changes in weather. we may need a whole section on this. i do know that i am careful when buying from these areas. it is not just the slight out of round issue, but also the reaction of the wood in other ways.

Now, I am much older and wiser, . .
so I am looking for a girl with really, big tits.
Funny story there.
Us congaleros keep looking, and end up going through a lot of drums, a lot of money gone.
And then we get older and wiser
and buy Volcanos!
As far as out of round drums go, I agree and have seen/heard excellent sounding drums/quintos that are out of round. Maybe it does add to the dryness of the sound. To me though it does decrease value of a drum.
As far as the alma goes, I can hear a slight metallic ring in my Skin on Skin tumba. It is very slight and most would not notice, but it is there. I tried muffling it by jamming rubber between the alma and shell and even wrapped sections with tape. This reduced the ring, but I ended up taking that stuff out and let it be natural, I actually like the sound.
