For what it worth:

In the early 70's I had a set of pretty King Congas, white pin striped over purple so dark it looked black. I beat them up so much packing 'em the finish got ruined. When they scratched there was a terrible white fiberglass under there that looked baaaaaaaad.

I ended up repainting them and trading them in part for some new Gon Bops. The Kings were really ringy sounding and I liked the Gon Bops a lot better.
