I bought these from one of our respected members. As you see picture is a little fuzzy. When I got them they had just a little too much "character" for my liking. So out came mister "Sander"

This is after mr."Sander" and mrs. "Brush" were done. The tumba has freshly mounted mule skin from Isaac at JCR.

Now you're talking! Great labour of love!!!

What finish did you use? Also did you just re-use the conga head? Did you mark it so that you re-mounted it in exactly the same position?

THanks for good words guys.

The finish is Cabot Polystain. The conga had a plastic head that doesn't sound too bad in the band situaiton. So I put it back on for now. I do have a mule skin that I'll probably put on the conga. I didn't mark the head, didn't seem to make much difference for the plastic one.

hey fed, nice work. i have few refinishing projects i have done. and it is a labor of love.
ill post some pics of the one's i have already done soon.
im currently working on some carribbean rhythms conga set of 3. that had the paintings on them. i stripped them down, sanded, stained and finished. i love art but the paintings werent doing any justice to them. and now they look sweet. i am also adding bands to it. they are going to look really nice when complete.
like i said, ill post some pics once complete.

you sure can...
I sanded... it was major pain in the neck, that maroon stain was tough to get rid off. The clear coat wasn't that bad. I actualy used belt sander first, but you have to be really careful.

The stain was brushed on with very cheap spongy brush, 5 coats. Gently hand sanded after first coat with 220 sand paper. Oh and it's a stain and poly in one.

Awesome job!
Apart from looking great you've probably doubled the congas value.

All you need to do now is buff 'em up with a buffing wheel so they glimmer like gold! :p

I can't wait to try out that tumba with the mule skin!
