I believe they are very good.
I have got a vintage predecessor, built similarly, but it´s Thai oak only:
an AFRO Elite conga with a killer sound!

After a while (breaking-in period) you will see - you have got fantastic drums!

breaking in es cuando los cueros se van ajustando bien y empiesan a sonar mejor eso toma tiempo tienes que tacarlas y se van ajustando bien. Con el tiempo empiesan a sonar mejor.

BTW do the Pearl Elites weigh as much as the former Afro congas?
Mine are heavy but the sound is superb!
