Sweet Gon Bops in San Antonio

Postby deadhead » Wed Apr 22, 2009 1:06 pm

There's a really nice set of gon bops for sale in San Antonio if anyone is interested. I'd jump all over them if I had the money. They look to be in great shape. I don't see these side plates or hoops very often, anyone know what the deal is with the vertical side plates?

Tonio, the measurements correspond more to a quinto and a conga. First time I have seen this type of hardware on a GB. IMHO I never really cared for the lack of corporate identity by GB, but I guess they just wanted to please the different tastes.( stay away from the tear drop types) doesn't really work. Also of all of the makers out there, there is not one single plate that really impresses me, very little design consideration . In most cases they are UGLY.

Regarding sizes, these are typical sizes for a conga and tumba for Gon Bops.
Their quinto is usually 9.5 or so. I've had a quinto that size and my current GB conga is 10.5.

I have to disagree about the "tear drop" style rim which resembles the modern comfort curves.
I find them very comfortable and they are the easiest to change skins on of any style of rim I
have come across. If you can get past the looks, they are a good design. However, it's all personal preferences,
of course.

Just to add what BnB said, while the head measurements are indeed what we would think of today as quinto and conga, sizes were different/smaller back when these were made. And the shape of the drum - the whole profile - has a major impact on whether a drum is quinto, conga, tumba or whatever. (I know you know this, Oslongo, but I'm just pointing it out for anyone who may not). Check out this photo of 3 old Gon Bops quinto/conga/tumba.

As for old Gon Bops sizes, here are some photos I took from a 1972 catalog I have. The sizes listed here are for the International Series, but all the GB series had the same sizes. [obviously, Q=quinto, C=conga, T=tumba. L=large]. I'm pretty sure they measured the diameter across the top before the bearing edge was cut.
