PJ Percussion from Denmark

Postby seisporocho1 » Wed Jul 22, 2009 3:06 am

Recently watched a bunch of Eliel Lazo Linares videos and was I not only amazed by this kid's skills but realized his drums sounded big and full. His tones are awesome (not to mention his sick slap). Then I learned that he is sponsored by PJ Percussion from Denmark (which one can see him play on some videos). So I bought the only cd available on iTunes called Blanco y Negro. The congas sound great on the album. His tuning is very much like Anga's.....
Anyway, I searched the forum for PJ but they seem to have not been mentioned here before.
Does anyone have one of these PJ drums? Can anybody say anything about them?

Thx
Aiku,

Thx Abakua! But much to your surprise, I had already Googled the company! :P

I just wondered if anyone had first-hand experience with these drums and if they are of true quality...even though so far I am sure they are....

Yet, I really enjoyed the program you used to show me how you googled it. Wanna share how you did it?!

PJ was definitely discussed here on the forum. Someone here posted a picture of a set. I may be wrong though. They seem to be of high quality.

Vinnie, I thought so too but I don't get any results when I put it in the 'search' box....

Let me know if you find it.

With all due respect, I am not too impressed by the hardware, it looks somewhat flimsy, mediocre  , the shell design, well its all right I guess.

King Konga,

"hardware, it looks somewhat flimsy, mediocre" .... I guess I do see that in this picture. They don't look impressive here. More like a CP. Not into that blk rubber at the bottom...

I know that Eliel plays the PJ UNO series (which are the ones I heard him play). Maybe they're a different wood etc...They sound good....

Hola 6x8. Your statement is partially correct, what I mean is that if you're comparing the hardware of the PJ to the quality of the current CP hardware I agree 100%, it most definitely "STINKS", but in regards to the early 90's and previous, the hardware on the CP was in fact just as good as the LP Classics or the LP Matadors of today, same thickness and backing plates, tension rods etc, what was and is different is the drum size and shape. I recently acquired a set of early 90's CP and let me tell you, the hardware on these babies is top notch, check out the attached picture.

Yep, nowadays the hardware is thinner. That CP def has better equipment. Is it the same wood as today?
What made you buy a CP?!!

Hola 6x8. Yes the wood is the same, siam Oak. I did not buy these CP, they were given to me two weeks ago by a good friend, they are in very good condition with no cracks, and they really do sound nice. I have more pictures posted on the eighteenth page of the "Picture" thred, check them out whenever you have a chance. Adios.

Hi Fellow congueros

I´m from Denmark, and have played PJ Congas many times, although my own congas are LP´s.
PJ Sessionline are quite fantastic drums, they are on the heavy side, but sound awesom. I saw Eliel Lazo live two weeks ago, and he actually
plays PJ Uno series, which are the lower priced series from PJ. But that guy can probably make any conga sound great...
Here is a picture of me playing PJ Sessionline Congas: http://www.mycongaplace.com/my/home/pic ... 1&lingua=E

Guys,

as to the PJ sideplates, I must object. I find they look exactly like they should. They are just not overly bulky, but they do an optimal job. When I ordered my Schalloch prototypes, they didn't have their own hardware yet, so I could choose what I wanted. I chose the PJ fittings, and they are the last to ever break or bend. They are fastened at 4 points. I play my set for 23 years now (since 1986), and nothing has happened. (I just posted a photo at http://www.mycongaplace.com/forum/eng/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2851&start=30.)

I used to like the PJ timbales, too.

The reason why I didn't buy PJs back then, was because they were really heavy. They are also considerably higher than LPs, for example. And I did not like the groove beneath the edge. That's furniture design.

Here is a new PJ conga serie, made of a single piece of wood, imported from Cuba:

http://shop.slagtojctr.dk/product.asp?product=6986

The founder of PJ Drums & Percussion, Peter Kragh-Jacobsen, is still present in the workshop of slagtøj centret (Drum-Center) in Copenhagen:

In the eighties PJ-congas were known as highest quality instruments with extremely good skins – and they were the most expensive congas on the market.
