Hi folks, I'm new to this forum. I've been playing congas for about 25 years and while I know the prices are "!!!!! Good Lord!!!" I use Latin Percussion gear. For years I found that I could extend the life of conga/bongo heads using the LP brand head oil (I also found that the mellowness it brought to the drums really fits my style of play). LP no longer offers this product, so does anyone know what that oil was derived from? Or maybe one of you has a suggestion on a suitable alternative. I'm really "hard" player, and sometimes use drumsticks on the bongos as well; that head oil really helped with the durability. thanks
Some people use shea butter, some use olive oli, some use manteca de corojo (red palm oil). You can apply it in a number of ways, some lay it on thick, let it sit , then wipe 24 hrs. later, some rub a small amount on their hands then play allowing the small amount present to be absorbed by the head. Some people simply use hand lotion with lanolin in it. PC
You know, I've heard all of those as possible treatments. Palm oil seems pretty popular..... but I'm wondering if anyone knows the make up of the oil Latin Percussion used to sell. Since I had used it for so many years, I know exactly how it affected my drum heads. I guess I'm going to try palm oil at some point, but man I sure liked that LP oil. thanks for the input
