JAISEN,

THOUGH NOT FOR SALE. I CAN CLEARLY STATE THAT MY ISLA REQUINTO IS RUMBA PERFECT!
MY ISLA REQUINTO IS UNIQUE IN THAT IT HAS A PROTOTYPE CROWN ON IT THAT ISLA MADE A FEW YEARS BACK. THE CROWN IS ROUGH ON THE EDGES AND CAN CUT YOU IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL (LOL). BUT THIS BABY SCREAMS WITH AUTHENTICITY ON ALL TONES PRODUCED.

SO GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SEARCH. I HOPE YOU'LL FIND YOUR BABY.

Hi Charlie

Your Drums look sweet the color is aging the wood looks clean. what do you use to keep your skins and drums looking so clean and fresh? I think I once heard you use lemon oil ? however the skins look like they get the manteca treatment no?

Saludos

Congamyk´s requinto has got a very thick skin if I can see that correctly in the photo.
I am just wondering if a skin thickness like that is common with those drums?
BTW my latest acquisition, a Patato requinto, has got a rather thick skin too and
I find it perfect - but then, it is a fiberglass drum that needs thicker skin per se
and can stand the strain.
I just would like to know if there is any experience to share.
Peace & drum

A requinto is typically for rumba style settings. For this type of setting, traditionally a thicker style skin is used (on a well constructed drum with good hardware) for the high pitched 'bell like' tone the requinto is known for.

MARCO,
I USED LEMON OIL IN THE PAST. BUT, FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS I'VE BEEN USING EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL.
IT'S A PURE AND NATURAL OIL AND EASY TO GET FROM ONES OWN KITCHEN. IT'S VERY EASY TO USE AND CAN ALSO BE KEPT ON THE HANDS AS A SKIN CONDITIONER AS WELL. I USE IT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE DRUM. JUST A LITE COAT.

MIKE,
MY REQUINTO CAME WITH A MEDIUM THIN COW. THEN AS AN EXPERIMENT, I PURCHASED A THICK COW SKIN THAT WAS CLOSE TO 1/4 INCH THICK. IT TURNED OUT OK. BUT, THE SOUND WAS ALSO HELD BACK A BIT (MUFFLED: NOT A GOOD THING). SO NOW I HAVE A MEDIUM THIN MULE SKIN FROM L&H PERCUSSION, AND IT'S BETTER THAN EVER. I FEEL THAT A MEDIUM THIN SKIN IS JUST RIGHT FOR A DRUM LIKE MINE ( WOOD SHELL). IF YOU HAVE A FIBERGLASS REQUINTO, IT'S REALLY HARD, BECAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE RINGING OVERTONES. IF YOU GO THIN, THE RINGING WILL INCREASE. SO GOING ON THE THICKER SIDE MIGHT HELP. (WOOD IS THE SAFEST WAY TO GO). ALSO, FIBERCLASS DRUMS TEND TO DEFORM IF LEFT OUT IN THE SUN TOO LONG.

Hey Charlie,
the drier sound is what I am after, and
it is really amazing how fast you can stop the
ringing sound of that fiberglass requinto by
simply hanging a piece of thick fluffy fabric inside.
In general I like it when conga skins are
a bit on the thicker side.
Anyway, enjoy your Isla requinto, it looks awesome
and must be a killer with that L&H skin!
Peace & drum
