As to your old gon bops ,ugly you can rechrome plates, lugs and crown if fiberglass needs fixing the fiberglass any auto part store will help you with chemicals need to repair or an auto body shop and will make them look like new.
I put new nuts on them and ran the lugs through dies. I'm happy as heck with them. Only thing I would change is to put some spacers or some longer nuts on them. Of course, one day I'd love to find their mother tumba.
I have their mother super tumba is a 13 1/4" Gon Bops mahogany wood over fiberglass gel coat. This set belonged to Nelson "Flaco" Padron, who recorded "Saturday Night Fever" with the Bee Gees here in South Florida. Is a very nice sounding set, which he had since 1975. I'm selling the set, macho 11" hembra 13 1/4". Almost impossible to find a Gon Bops super tumba from the 70's in this day and age. Venezuelan mule heads.
I saw those before. Unfortunately I have some hands in my pocket at the moment. If they leave me with anything we will definitely talk. Do they have the fiberglass mat or just the gel coat?
They have the fiberglass mat. I was after Flaco for years (over 20) because of the big 13 1/4" super tumba. Flaco left for Spain to live with his daughter and he endorses Meinl, so he call me up and asked if I still wanted the set. I decided to take him up on them. Now I live in a one bedroom apartment and have an excess of congas. Love them and their sound but are taking too much space.
