Leedy 2: Any stories you can tell us about Junior. I didn't know he made drums out of wine barrels. I remember buying my conga at a store on 42 st near 7th i believe. They had a lot of them quinto, conga, tumbas.I also saw one or two of them that had separated from the stave.Did you ever go to his shop?

These are photos of a visit I made to Junior in 2003 at his apartment and workshop on Havemeyer St. in Brooklyn. On that ocassion his girlfiend had made "asopao and mofongo" and I was invited to stay and eat. I ran to the corner grocery store and bought (2) 6 packs of Henekein for the feast. Here are some photos of that day.
The 1st is an 11 3/4" he had for sale.
2nd is the inventory he had on hand that day, he was comissioned to make a few "bomba" drums.
3rd was an 11" quinto he had for sale. It sounded incredible. You can see Junior's legs and white socks.
4th is the one I wanted but he would not sell. It had been made for a Colombian drug lord and three of the innner staves could be removed to smuggle cocaine inside the conga. Had made it in the 70's.

Here is an early quinto Junior had made for Ray Barretto, very rare beacuse it was 11" but had 6 lugs. It was a custom order from Ray. I bought it from Junior and sold it to Robert Felcher in San Diego. He offered back to me, but I passed on it for now.

Amazing history of Junior conga drum's as witness on this forum. When i look in side of my Junior's congas the glue line's are so straight! My My Gon Bop's look like a kid's school project. Messy glue line's but the sound is great! Just gotta have almas made for them.
