cedar v caoba

Any perspectives on the diference? Acording to Matt the sonocs he's refurbing for me right now are cedar, i just sold a cedar cuban drum and I know my sonoc bata are cedar, what's the difference? Cuban cedar to me seems to be quite a bit denser than the american cedar I'm used to seeing, it's also a bit darker. Naybody else out there have cedar congas that they can comment on? I know there are plenty of cedar bongos, and requenas were cedar, but they were quite thin and somewhat fragile.

I have a SONOC Caoba quinto that sings. I also have an oak SOS quinto. I'm thinking of selling either one and just keeping one. Here is a photo of the SONOC, just like the ones Los Muñequitos and Tata used.

Cuban cedro is not like American cedar, is much harder. In Cuba Requena made his congas and bongos from Cedro. Vergara used Caoba for his solid bongos and Oak (Roble) from wine barrels for his tumbadoras. Coaba was always a costly wood. The Cuban government stopped using Caoba around the mid 80's and is now a protected species.
