I would also say it depends what you want - occasionally I use a 16" Sabian AAX El Sabor handcrash
too with a two-conga setup, I find it pretty versatile, it sounds very fine when hit by hand.
THe 16" size requires a stand though.
When I feel like needing a challenge, I try a left-hand tumbao with my right hand, a stick-played cascara-
pattern on the cymbal and a foo-played clave. But that is just for practice, as I am not firm yet.
To the original question again:
In more traditional contexts a crash cymbal might not be something you need, but in
Latin Jazz/Jazz/Rock/Fusion etc. it can add accents that fit in very well, especially if
there is no timbalero or trap drum player. The cymbal must not be too thick, otherwise it will hurt your hands.
Personally I would not play anything smaller than a 12" Splash by hand.
Peace & drum
