I went ahead with the remo NuSkyn cause it was there and easy.

It was way thicker than the LP skin that came off it. I didn't play the LP all that long, maybe a day or so, but when I was tuning it up, I was having trouble keeping the tone consistant, so I thought I'd bring it all the way down and start from zero. Then I noticed that the 'ring' on the lp head was warped and bent. I've got it tuned up to quinto, but I think it sounds better closer to conga pitch... which is actually pretty good cause my other drum is a tumba. I'll keep playing with it, but I have a feeling that African cow I have will be going on the drum soon enough.
