Wow those refinished palladiums look very nice. As for this lugging congas around issue. I have had shoulder problems in the past so to maintain my shoulder health I always carry 1 conga at a time, and I dont use the handles, I grab them by the rim. Very little stress there and I have to carry them a lot so I try not to make the shoulder mad :)

At large gigs we use carts to move the drums and the congas all at once.

With those palladiums I think I would have to buy some hardcases with flat backs and then just use a small luggage dolly to transport them from vehicle to stage.
Control, for smilers cant be bought

Alafia Abure Rhumbatumba!
I hope that you are well and in an abundance of blessings!

I definitely have a "rock-n-roller" to cart my heavy stuff around, yeah boy!
I have a lower back issue, which keeps me ever vigilant of heavy carting and lifting. I actually took the handles "off" of the drums, I don't use them, and they only serve to 'scratch' another drum if not careful.

As for carrying drums for short distances, I prefer to carry one-at-a-time and over my shoulder. Unfortunately, these barrels weigh so much and I don't want to fork-out the rediculous amount that LP want's for their "Palladium" bags (they look perfect for the two 14" Supertumbas I have). I'm still looking for their price to go down, or hopefully I'll find a bargin online soon. I currently have them in my garage drying out (the heads). I woke up this morning and mounted both skins between 5:00am and 7:00am.

I'll post some pics of my adventure as soon as I can!

Many blessings!

Onile!

Onile,

They look fan-bloody-tastic, brother.
I have recently got my grubbies on a set and you have got me thinking about my next project.
I'll have to negotiate with 'her indoors' of course.
Thanks for sharing, me old china plate.(sorry-just having a Cockney rhyming slang moment :D )

LP congas have never looked so good! Incredible! Great job onile! If I were you I would totally hold on to those for studio/ special gig work and just a buy a used set of classics or something for regular gigging.

I'm interested in your refinishing method. I refinished an old Toca conga last summer-but it didn't come out the way i wanted it. What did you use for stain and or polyurethane/sealant? Did you hand rub the stain or use a brush?

Again-great job! I'm looking forward to see a picture of your whole set all finished!

Aloha Brudda onile,

Massiv! Me like what you did to dem palladiums. That color gives them drums a whole new character. That color you chose is mean! I'm partial to the dark color wood drums. They must sound slammin' with dem new skins...a sound byte would be nice :p

Keep on poundin'... Aloha, maSSivdrums

Aloha Abure MaSSivdrums!
Yeah Boy! Deese barrels are sounding great my brudda!
Sound byte, I've got to figure out how to do one first!

I actually attempted at first, to use a polyurethane stain (Minwax Wood Finish -Penetrates, Stains & Seals: English Chestnut #233), which was high gloss, but ran into problems. I was doing it outside when I thought the wind would cooperate, but not! I brought them inside after sanding them again, and tried it once more, but found that I had these little pieces of airborne lint and cat hair (I have pets of course). I sanded them once again and went with a flat stain. Let me say however, that the product I indicated above, left the drums looking excellent, if only it werent' for the little airborne attachments. In the first two occassions, I used a "mini-roller" which I bought at Lowes' (local hardware store), then I settled with hand-rubbing them. Lots of work either way, but well worth it! The last application I took them into the garage (little to no air movement, no airborne elements, and great results.

I mounted the skins on the two 14" yesterday morning, and so now I'm waiting for them to cure on the drum. I'll post pics in a couple of days!

Alafia Abure Fed!
I hope that you are well my brother!
I had looked into Gator Bags, however I don't think that the Palladiums would fit (32" tall), plus not sure if the circumference of the drum will fit in the bag either! Two for one, that IS a great deal. I have other drums that I may get some of them for!

Thanks for the heads-up my brother!

Many blessings!

Aloha Fed,

That Gator bag deal is mean! I purchased 2 bags and luv 'um. The biggest drum that can fit into the bag is my 12.5 Tumba. I tell ya, wheels on da bag is a back saver. Last week we did a gig at a downtown festival and I had to park a 1/2 a mile away. Kinda tricky rolling drums, cuz when the ground gets uneven they tend to tip to one side, making you stop and re adjust the bag. But hey, better than backpacking it. My wife ( wonderful roadie) was ultra happy for the rolling bags! :p

Keep on Poundin'.... Aloha, maSSivdrums
