Well it's funny, everyone would agree thin skin for a bongo macho and thicker for the hembra,
and that's kind of what JC is talking about there, but a lot of guys seem to be going the opposite way
for their congas.

Asking for advice from other guys is cool, but there's always trial and error to find out what works
best for your drums and your ears.

Exactly, my timba bongos are a great example, I can't put them down at the moment and it's due to the thicker steer that I have on the macho that I'm playing with less tension, it's almost the opposite of where I was a year ago when I had a thin kip that I was cranking hard. I still like the sound of the kip and I'll probably switch back in a bit and discover new dynamics of that sound. Two things I know regarding thickness at the moment, my JCR bongo need a thicker skin on the hembre (which is nice because I have an eye on the thin blond mule that's on there now for another macho for my timbas !) and my M. Smith tumba needs a thinner skin because even low tuned it's not putting out much bass or resonant opens.

I love talking about skins !
